In order to improve key areas of your life, the most important thing to do first is to gain some perspective on where you are right now, how life is right now and how you’d like it to be.


Many of my clients come to me with a fuzzy idea of what they want from life both now and in the future. When I ask them what’s working, quite often they haven’t given this much thought, spending more time and energy focused on the stuff that just isn’t working.


Before starting out on your personal or professional journey, it’s absolutely vital that you are clear about your starting point. Cementing the foundations from which you launch yourself and shape your future, is a crucial building block of your future success. Once you know this, you can set about dealing with your most important life issues in turn.

As human beings, we need to constantly challenge ourselves to learn, grow, and contribute to others and the world around us. But more than anything we need a compelling vision for our future. Something to aim for and get excited about.


So what’s your long term vision?  What is it you want to achieve in the next 12 months, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years?  What sort of impact do you want to make? How do you want to be remembered?


Whether you realise it or not, you already spend time visualising your future. Work, life, relationships, family, finances, friends, social life, achievements, successes, failures and the world around us all come into play when you think about the future you want.


Visualisation is one of the most powerful tools for manifesting what you want however; you will often spend time visualising in the wrong way. Every time you worry about the future, get anxious about what might or might not happen, or convince yourself that times are “bad” or “tough”… you are visualising … but unfortunately, about the wrong things!


When you consciously visualise about the circumstances you DO WANT, you reclaim control over your experience. You’ll feel more positive and optimistic, too. Do you Imagine things not working and everything going wrong? Guilty?

Clarity and focus are essential qualities for success in life. Clarity is not something that just turns up if you hang around and wait patiently.  It’s not something that is bestowed on you from birth. Yes some people do seem to have “the gift of clarity”, the innate ability to see things exactly as they should be, with no effort. But if you don’t possess that gift you need to work on developing it or you become just so tied up in your own thinking you can’t ever see a way forward.


But the reality is CLARITY IS A STATE YOU CAN CREATE FOR YOURSELF.  It comes from a calm, quiet and still mind. Only you can truly define the outcomes you are looking for and creating a suitable thinking environment is crucial to your success.


Clear goals bring clarity to your future direction and essential to your success in all areas of life. When faced with an obstacle, how exactly do you deal with it and turn it into something positive?


You may be one of the lucky ones who manages to glide around, over and beyond life’s obstacles with grace simplicity and ease. But if you’re not, you may well struggle through a hit and miss process until you find something that works, or worse, find yourself in exactly the same place 6 months down the road.


The good news is there are only 9 major categories of life obstacle that could be preventing you from getting from where you are now to where you want to be. And what’s even better, is that you’re probably not struggling with all of them. Most people find that while all the categories are relevant to some degree, their major life obstacles consistently fall into one or two “obstacle areas”.


When you know what those categories are, you can identify the obstacles you come up against most often and then choose appropriate responses and interventions to power on through.


You need never fear obstacles or not reaching your goals ever again.

The next natural step after determining what you want, is laying out a plan for achieving it. Now that might sound like stating the obvious, but believe me, I come across people with great ideas, huge goals and the clarity and focus you think they need to achieve it. But the one thing they are missing is a plan, a start date, a real commitment to their first step.


You can know specifically what you want to achieve, what it looks like and when you want it, put without a plan you’re going nowhere.


Many people make a mistake in assuming that their plan has to be an all or nothing proposition. They think they need the whole journey mapped out with military precision and meticulous detail for the whole journey from A-Z.


Not so!  In fact if you ask anyone who has achieved anything of note they will probably say that the path they thought they were going to take, actually wasn’t what ended up happening. But what they will tell you, is that knowing the first few steps and committing to them were critical to their success.


Of course situations change and you have to be prepared to make changes along the way but you have to commit to your fist step and trust that when you take that step you’ll see the next one and the next, and the next, edging you closer to where you want to be. If you want it to happen faster, you just take bigger steps more often.
