Make your goals become reality!

Ok imagine you’ve arrived on the outskirts of  a major city for the first time by car and you’re  told to drive to an address in the centre of  this bustling metropolis!  But there’s a problem! There are no road signs, you don’t have a map and no Sat Nav. You only have the  address and general description of your final destination.

Q: How long do you think it would take you to find your final destination with no road map and no signs?

A: Too Long! You’d probably give up, turn around and head home.

We all have new challenges to face in life, be that professional, personal, self imposed or acquired.  Its all well and good having a great new shiny challenge but if that challenge doesn’t have a plan that’s clear, with the right level of commitment, then quite honestly you’re not going to succeed.

A plan that lacks clarity, commitment and action remains just that A PLAN.

By making your goals crystal clear, breaking them down into manageable chunks, getting the support you need and taking action, you’ve got  far better odds of success.  If you’re going to bother with a challenge in the first place you should at least give you self a fighting chance.

So if you don’t want to give up on the outskirts of London here’s a suggestion as to how you can handle any new challenge heading your way:

Get Clear

What exactly is it you’re trying to achieve?

All the successful people I meet are oh so very specific about what it is they want. They’ve got a vision, clear goals and are single minded in achieving it. Creating a vibrant vision of what it is you want to achieve is a vital step in taking you closer to your goal and completing your challenge successfully.

Clear goals, can transform you into a power house of momentum and change, because you then know exactly what  it is you want, where you’re heading and how you’re going to get there. As you move towards them you’ll feel more energized and effective, happier and stronger. You’ll  also feel more confident and competent in yourself and what you can achieve. On the other hand without a clear goal, you’ll find yourself meandering along, getting nowhere and wondering why you even bothered.

So try this:

  • Spend some time alone, relaxed and uninterrupted.
  • Let your mind wander and focus on your challenge.
  • Create a really vibrant vision of the goal, the outcome you want and how that will shape everything around you.
  • Imagine it in all its glorious detail, the people supporting you, how you’re going to feel think and behave once you’ve achieved what you want.
  • What are the benefits it brings to you, your life and those around you?
  • What is it that you really want to achieve?
  • Where are you now and where do you want to be?
  • Describe your goal in as much detail as possible.
  • Most importantly

WRITE YOUR GOAL DOWN

Commit your goals to writing you’re 40% more likely to achieve them.
If you tell someone else, you’re 60% more likely to achieve them.
If you have a coach you’re 95% more likely to achieve your goal

Get a Plan

We’ve all got 8,760 hours in one year, 189 in a week and 24 in a day. It’s your choice as to what you do with them. If you don’t design a plan that works for you within your own time frame, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan and how frustrating and constricting is that?

In order to achieve your goal you need to break it down into much smaller chunks. Create a number of clear stepping stones and sign posts along the way in order to get you there.

  • On a blank piece of paper write down all the things you believe you need to do in order to achieve your goal.
  • Now select the 3 things that will make the biggest difference in moving you closer to your goal.

Get Support

To achieve your goals it’s vital to surround yourself with the right sort of people. The more you surround yourself with successful, inspirational sparky people, the more you’ll learn and the greater the likelihood that some of it will rub off on you. Remove the energy drainers who inject nothing but negativity into all that you do.

Energisers

These are the people who will help ignite your new ideas, inspire you to achieve more, challenge you, stretch you and encourage you to be all that you can be and more. They’re essential for your goals, dreams and challenges to come to fruition.

The Home Team

These are your fundamental support people, your friends, family and work colleagues who you know you can rely on for support and encouragement as you move towards your goal.

Energy Sappers

Get RID! These are the people who make you feel crap! They sap you of confidence, are pessimistic and leave you feeling lifeless, demotivated, uncertain and lacking in energy. You don’t have time for them. Identify them and minimize the amount of time you spend with them.

  • Who are your Energisers?

  • Who’s on your Home Team?

  • Who are the Energy Sappers?

Get Going

Ok you’ve identified the Goal, made a plan and got the right support. Fantastic. You must be almost there right?

Well no , not really !

“An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.”

~ Friedrich Engels

  • Be proactive
  • Take the initiative
  • Get things moving
  • Develop new habits

Don’t stop and wait for things to happen to you. It’s your choice as to what you do next, but you’re never going to move forward if you just sit and wait for things to happen.

Get into the habit of putting things into action. In the real world timing might never be perfect and you’ll always be waitng for tomorrow. Its important you take that first step, no matter how small, to moving closer to your goal and practice this new habit everyday.

  • Be a doer

If you constantly think about things and never get them done they plague your thoughts and stifle your momentum. By becoming a doer you’ll get more done, stimulate more thoughts in the process and become more energized and confident in your achievements.

  • Feel the fear and do it anyway

Is fear one of your biggest stumbling blocks to action?  Well you’ll find that action is the best cure for fear. Once you get going you’re confidence will build and you will deal with those obstacles as they occur. You’re in control if you’re taking action.

  • Ask for Help

Your support team is there to help you. Share your concerns and above all don’t sit in front of that obstacle hoping it will disappear. Because it won’t. Call on your team of experts for the help you need.
