THE SIX QUESTIONS THAT GOT ME UNSTUCK!

 

Having spent the weekend in Bath completing an 8.5 km, 24 obstacle Extreme Event, wading through mud, water and tackling some very large hills, I wanted to share with you a time when I was stuck.  Stuck at the prospect of challenge and change and doing things that scared me!

There was a time in my life when I just knew something needed to change. I was unhappy at work, feeling stressed, overwhelmed, like I was being sucked into a vortex of negativity I couldn’t escape. I was stuck, stuck, stuck, stuck, stuck!

STUCK

I considered myself to be an extremely positive person, but somehow the positivity had run out and I was at that point where I was saying to myself … “there has to be more to life and work than this?” “Something needs to change”

The problem was I didn’t know what that looked like and in the absence of a vision of my “What next?” I decided to focus on the feelings I was having because at that point they were so overwhelming I couldn’t focus on anything else. I wanted to acknowledge and understand the things that were making me feel crap because I was so miserable I didn’t even recognise myself and that scared me.

This was the start of my own coaching journey and there were 6 questions I asked myself that really helped me think things through and break the cycle of negativity. I want to share those questions with you today because I know these were the ones that worked for me, the ones that started to unlock and release the negative and bad feelings I was having and helped stabilise my emotions until I could think more clearly and decide what I wanted to do next.

Take each question in turn and write down everything that comes to mind. It’s incredibly cathartic to get it out of your head and onto paper. It can also be just a little bit shocking because you realise how much stress, negativity and tension you’re holding onto.

Be totally honest, nobody needs to see your answers and let your thoughts and feelings flow.

So deep breath here we go. Ask yourself these questions…

 

• How do I feel now?

• Why do I feel like this?

• How do I want to feel?

• What are the things that will make me feel like I want to feel?

• What needs to change?

• Who can help me?

 

By answering these questions you will gain a clearer understanding of where you are now, where you want to be and how you might at least start moving closer to the feelings you want to feel.
